I have amazing respect for Russell Simmons and the impact his visionary embrace of hip hop has had on pop culture. But
the latest from his Hip Hop Summit Action Network in the wake of the
Imus scandal is ridiculous. He calls for rappers and producers to voluntarily bleep or remove the b- n- and h- words from "clean" versions of songs that get broadcast over regular radio -- going so far as to call them "extreme curse words" -- but makes no such demand about the misogynistic embrace of the langage in the unedited versions of the music. In other words, it's ok for
Mooks to continue to degrade, demean and objectify women when "keepin' it real" so long as you front to get radio play. Gimme a break!
