Questions like these matter to me fundamentally because I care about justice and secondly because I have friends and family on all sides of the issue. Social activists I know, including faith-based and secular, were quick to denounce the shooting before examining the facts when it first occurred, and many have protested the verdict; a friend and ministry client organized a peaceful demonstration yesterday. Conservatives I know dismiss the critiques of activists out of hand. And while I didn't know Sean Bell, I know people (black, white, brown, and other) who could have found themselves leaving a strip club at 4 am. But we as youth ministries Now do have a choice. What is our Kingdom response to the growing canyon between the rich and the poor. Unfortunately, we Now tend to fall into Either/Or extremes that keep us from offering deep justice to all, regardless of class.
