If one looks at the developed West, well, Friedman is certainly right…
However, his observations only stand up in a vacuum. Throughout capitalism’s history, class systems have stood entrenched in it, and have even been vital to its survival. Keeping a large stream of workers in a state of poverty and desperation is how the maintenance of human capital is ensured. It wasn’t until the rise of globalisation where the “developed” West could begin to export its exploitation of labour that the masses Friedman speaks of could escape their grinding poverty. Truth be told, grinding poverty effects more people on this planet right now than at any other point in history, we just don’t see it. Debatably, capitalism could be seen as the source of both the highest and lowest standards of living seen in human history, and it has only truly helped “the masses” when they’ve gone off and organised and taken the part of the pie that was due to them.
But then again, I’m not an economist. I just observe the kinds of things that Friedman has tried to justify in his writings, and still come to the conclusion that right and wrong have not changed in light of perceived economic advantages…

He asks “Just tell me where in the world you find these angels who are going to organize society for us”? The interesting use of the word “angel”, of course brings to mind the Kingdom of God. But short of the Church, I am hopeful that our new president will put the value of caring for the quality of life for our country’s citizens as the prime motivation for the organization that’s happening in his administration, and NOT the greed motivator spoken of by Mr. Friedman. So although we are a capitalist society, I hope that doesn’t assume exclusion from governmental compassion.

Concerning all forms of isms, if they are governed by the law of love they will succeed. If they are ruled by greed the results will always be failure.
