From the Fulton Street Revival... Saturday morning, 9/22

Doug Stringer, John Beckett, Dan Stratton Moderated by Os Hillman

JB: the lesson of Jeremiah Lanphier. Why did God initiate revival through a businessman? 1 – His heart. As he surveyed the poverty and injustice, he was gripped by God’s heart for the city. He asked the right question. “Lord, what would you have me do?” Faith grew that God would show the way, and he was willing to obey. How did the idea come? A mere thought, unassuming, as he went about his business. No committee meetings, demographic studies, etc. 2 – His skills. After the idea came, the business mind kicked in. Tactics chosen. Date was set; pamphlets distributed; signs prepared; people could come as they pleased; “Five minute rule”; broke up the old, long routine. “Brief, pointed and to the purpose.” The million who came to faith in 1857 was 1 in 3o Americans. Today, that’s the combined populations of all of New England. Doug S: Biblically and historically, God brought three areas together during revival: prayer, marketplace, and compassion and social justice. Sense of desperation drove the conversation. Revival comes by desperation, which comes either from passion or persecution. Live lives of conviction rather than preference. For example: William Wilberforce changed moral decline of British Empire and abolished slavery. We are called to be witnesses who rescue lives and save souls. We must overcome the western dichotomy between the secular and sacred. Invade the culture with tangible expressions of Christ. Evangelism without social service is deficient and social service without evangelism in impotent. “A crisis is a terrible thing to waste.” Lanphier saw the social crisis and prayed for power to bring change. God uses business and cultural leaders in ways church leaders cannot because of their credibility with the secular space. The character of the kingdom eminates from the character of the king; relational equity opens doors. Dan S: Called as a commodities trader. Led to the Lord by a gorgeous trader he wanted to date. He “never did homework on revival, just got stuck doing it.” Started the “Faith Exchange Newsletter” as a way to use humor to communicate with his peers. Planted church 10 years ago. His car was two parking spaces away from the bomb van in 1993. Church burned for 5 days after 9/11 and they never missed a service. Two new churches started in the last few months around the corner – he can’t be possessive of the neighborhood. We’re all needed. “Pro-Vision Network” hunting for bold brash Peters who can do things. OH: Loren Cunningham and Bill Bright (1975): “If we can raise a generation that effects the 7 mountains of culture we can reclaim culture.” Yet 90% of church-goers do not feel equipped to engage culture effectively. JB: There’s a fear of marketplace and people therein. Generally it’s simply rooted in a lack of exposure and knowledge. Get educated. DS: We communicate through our own filters. Draw the unchurched in based on how we’re reconciled to each other. Become a connecting point for cultural leaders to actually use their gifts. What’s going on here? Overcome the perception of fragmentation and division by being reconciled to each other. DanS: Ephesians 4: 1 – You have to be competent. 2 – Translate truth for marketplace. 3 – Walk worthy, refuse to be offended, pursue unity, equip the church, and walk holy. “I’m a gab it and grab it guy” because I came up under Hagin and Copeland.
