My cousin Kristi is in the hospital with a kidney infection -- frightening given her history of renal illness for almost 30 years.
A few months older than me, Kristi was my rock as a petrified, four-year-old student on his first day of school 28 years ago. A few months later, both of Kristi's kidneys failed, propelling her down a harrowing journey of medical scares and near death experiences that continued until her fourth transplant in 2002 finally stabilized her health.
Kristi's mom (my mother's sister Phyllis) passed away when she was 8 or 9, and our grandmother, who had assumed many of the responsibilities for Kristi's care, died three years later. Yet through it all, Kristi persevered. She lived for six years in the 90s with my parents, and co-founded
Generation Xcel in 1996. Her courage inspired
the highest prize Xcel awards to its outstanding staff member annually.
Kristi will face this latest challenge with the grace and dignity that has characterized her entire life. But please uplift her in prayer.
