Besides being one of my first blogging friends, Tony Sheng has impressed me over the years because of his thoughtful and at the same time passionate approach to evangelism and global missions. (In my experience with evangelists, too often you find thoughtfulness or passion, but not both.) He coordinates short-term missions opportunities for Grace Community Church (Columbia, MD) through a ministry called
SPACE (Students Prepared to Act For Christ's Empire), and as a
blogger, chronicles his research, insights, resources, and experiences for the rest of us to learn. (On a personal note, I owe one of the
biggest paradigm shifts in my recent life in large part to one of his devotionals.)
Because of my respect for him and his approach to ministry and the thoroughness that he brings to SPACE, it has been a great privilege to serve him and his team twice in the last year.
The first time, he brought graduating high school seniors to work with Generation Xcel for a few days last May, and then two weeks ago, they brought incoming sophomores to Chain Reaction in Baltimore. It is so encouraging to read his reaction to both trips, but
especially Baltimore.
"The concept of progression is important as we build students to understand cultures and impact the world. Starting with middle school, we try to progress students in both culture and physical proximity as they get older. The year between 9th and 10th grade has historically been a bit of a challenge for us.
"It is an important year because we want to focus teams on something close and something that gives students experience in serving and sharing in their own culture. The best preparation for going to serve in another culture is experience serving in your own culture first. And this helps us build students that care for both their own communities as well as lands far away....
This year, we finally scored. Chain Reaction helped our team serve locally, blessing strangers, and unashamedly stretch students. Props to Matt and Jeremy for shaping the future via our team."
Elsewhere on his blog, he reports:
"Most of the team said it was the best week of their lives."

I want to echo what you are saying. After 18 years of youth ministry and 5 years of heading up various domestic missions projects, SPACE was by far the best, well-prepared group we have hosted in a city. – That puts the Wake Forrest InterVarsity team in a close second.
What ever Tony and his leadership team is doing to develop their students works. It should serve as a model to all the missional youth ministries.
It is amazing that you needed Baltimore and Baltimore needed you! What a great week.

Thanks for the kind words to both you and Matt. Both of you challenge and encourage me and I know we are going to do more in the future as we seek to make an impact where we can.
