    10:00 — Introductions

10:15 — Jeremy Del Rio presentation (see separate Power Point)
    Why we’re meeting
We hosted 8 focus groups through UYWI Reload in
Fresno, Philadelphia, Chicago, Phoenix, Bay Area,
    Memphis, Pittsburgh, Memphis

10:25 — Kara Powell and Ginny Olson presented results from the focus groups

10:40 — Debrief of the report
    What’s True/Resonates?
    What’s Missing?

    #1: Defining social justice
    True/Resonates:
    • Kids need scholarships
    • Definitions are really strong
    • Systemic is really strong
    • Empowerment
    • Righting wrongs – but who defines right and wrongs?
    • Giving voice, esp to the marginalized
    • Speaking the truth – but whose truth?

    Missing:
    • Where is love in this list? And what about compassion?
    • Communal v individual
    • Biblical mandate
    • Contextual – it will look different in every area
    • It is really BOTH systemic AND focused on individuals
    •

#2: What is social justice not?
    True/Resonates:
    • Not programmatic, but systematic
    • Free giving without peronal involvement
    • Solidarity

    Missing:
    • Ask ourselves enough questions

#3: What makes youth workers who are effective in justice so effective?
    True/Resonates:
    • Not view as projects but people
    • Asking with a real heart for listening
    • We need to act outside of our own church
    • Need to act outside of our own churches
    • Working collaboratively WITH the community

    Missing:
    • Theological conviction/mindset for Shalom
    • Collaborative
    • Knowledge-seeker
    • Need an effective support system so not hit compassion burnout
    • Understanding that kids have great potential to catch a vision and be involved in social justice
    • Broad relationships with stakeholders outside of your community

#4: What justice issues most important to your community?
    True/Resonates:
    • Unequal access, often because of language barrier
    • Immigration is BIG in certain parts of the country
    • Injustice to kids by media; media becomes a surrogate parent

    Missing:
    • Need less bureaucratic red tape
    • Our response to media needs to be better thought out instead of just behavior modification

    MACRO OBSERVATIONS
    • The examples don’t seem to match the definitions in question #1. We know about social justice but we don’t know how to do it.
    • We are often focusing on the symptoms instead of the root, systemic causes.
    • Love cannot be overestimated. We will get more traction when we love folks past defensiveness. When we love people, we don’t see them as objects but brothers and sisters in Christ.
    • We often don’t know what “systemic” really is. We know it exists but we don’t know how to identify it and respond to it.
    • We need to not forget economic and power.
    • The issue of white privilege is missing.

11:15 — Jeremy Del Rio presented 2 proposals (see separate Power Point for more)
    1. Networking/online platform – urbnet and urbanministry.org
    2. Devotional

12:10 — Response from the group:
    NETWORKING PROPOSAL – GENERAL RESPONSE
    • We need to also do education as well as awareness.
    • What about international voices? International voices on American issues.
    • Important to also have sacrifice. What does the cross have to do with justice?
    • Need Biblical scholars – street philosophers and academics.
    • We need partner values.

    PARTNER ROLES/RESOURCES
    • WORLD VISION (via Lina) – interested in the networking side.
    • MAX TORRES – distilling this to a one page document that could be presented in context of Latino culture and language.

    AWARENESS PROPOSAL – GENERAL RESPONSE
    • Create opportunities for new voices – theology from below. Hear from TEENAGERS.
    • We could also include art, and other expressions beyond written word. Could do photograph, video interview, more audio.
    • What is our unique contribution to the social justice conversation?

    PARTNER ROLE/RESOURCES
    • WORLD VISION (via Corynne) – could be involved in campaign development.
    • FULLER CYFM AND NORTH PARK – continue the theological reflection and writing – and how can we engage other seminaries?
    • SPEAKERS – can those who speak make sure to talk about this in their talks?
    • UYWI – how can this be incorporated both in Reload and the Conference through speakers and general sessions?
    • All – Register at www.UrbanMinistry.org and begin uploading content that can be shared with a wider audience
    • All – Consider whether you want to contribute a 200-300 word devotional and RSVP to Jeremypussy download free moviesdirectory free movie adult xxxmovies facialgalleries movie sex freexxx trailers movienude movies beachmovies hypnomovies facial Map
