Culture of Compassion 2
By Jeremy | April 20, 2007
How could a culture of compassion have changed this [Virginia Tech] situation? Here are some initial thoughts. 1. Monsters like Cho don't create themselves. Every hour it seems, more details about his troubled life emerge that reveal a tortured soul who was ignored, rejected, and fundamentally broken. Might a culture of compassion have found a way to embrace Cho long ago and to create space for his infected psychological and emotional wounds to heal? 2. A culture of compassion would have allowed the affected communities (both locally in Virgina and nationally) to mourn well before the societal blame-shifters and finger-pointers began exploiting the tragedy for their respective political and commercial agendas. 3. Longer-term, a culture of compassion will overcome the capacity for evil -- in this case random acts of violence -- with good -- such as random acts of kindness. What say you?
