Someone emailed me the inspirational
story of Carolyn Thomas, a domestic violence survivor whose boyfriend killed her mother and shot her in the head, leaving her without most of her face.
"Trauma" scarcely describes the horrific price the 35-year-old Thomas has paid. The bullet skirted her brain but destroyed her right eye, her cheeks, her nose, her upper jaw, the roof of her mouth and most of her teeth. She needed a tracheotomy to breathe, a feeding tube for nourishment....
But knowledge is no balm for the loneliness that sometimes threatens to overwhelm her. It can't stop people from staring when she walks into a store.
Only a new face could do that, and a new face seemed impossible.
Who could create something out of nothing?

Estimates range from 960,000 incidents of violence against a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend per year to three million women who are physically abused by their husband or boyfriend per year.
Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime.
Nearly one-third of American women (31 percent) report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives
Nearly 25 percent of American women report being raped and/or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabiting partner, or date at some time in their lifetime
Thirty percent of Americans say they know a woman who has been physically abused by her husband or boyfriend in the past year.
Intimate partner violence is primarily a crime against women.
Women accounted for 85 % of the intimate partner violence (588,490 total) and men accounted for 15 % of the victims
While women are less likely than men to be victims of violent crimes overall, women are five to eight times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.
[I cannout vouch for the credibility of these stats because they were unattributed in the email. If anyone can point me to source material for the numbers, please do so in the comments. Thanks!]

I think she is definatley a survivor. I pray that she finds the courage to stand before women to convince them of the seriousness and dangers that cowardly men are capable of. It is very sad that a man could actually do that. I know a young lady with two little boys who recently was aresseted and put in jail because her abusive husband had a nail scrath on his face when the authorities showed up at there home. This comes after many years of her taking his phisical and verbal abuse…where is the wrong made right. Now she is currently on propation for a whole year, having to attend anger management, and a list of other classes, that she has to pay for out of pocket. So ladies i say, get out before it’s too late. Do not become the victim of some coward who say he loves you and shows you with his fist. excuse me if i seem too emotional.
