    Devotions – Chris Brooks

    Nehemiah 1:1-4 - They Wept

See 30-Year Visioning Chart (UrbNet Notes - Part 1)

    Connector = a coordinator
    * Role of connector – know many people on various levels, our emerging folks need to know these people

“When spider webs connect they can tie up a lion” – an Ethiopian proverb Book Recommendations: “Now Discover Your Strengths” – includes the Strengths finder test, a gallup tool

    "The Tipping Point"

2009 is the highest number of teens graduating high school - ever

Connectors need to be engaged in the institutions that are engaging our youth. Most of our youth spend the majority of their time outside of the church.
FYI - New York Times' articles on public libraries (libraries are not staffed to respond to the needs increasing numbers of youth hanging out) and social networking websites' "race to the bottom" (online social networks are key for this generation and are well beyond myspace.)
What’s Really Good? (In your cities) Models of effective networking Example: Twin Cities – the Center for Youth
Successes (by city) Challenges (not by city)
Boston (VA) -- neXus Boston (YW training model) Five components:

      • Research
      • Train
      • Support
      • Network
      • Resource

Divisions - the collaboration is church and para-church with Pastors at the table (through BMA)

Role as Connector: Consultant to collaborate and networker empowerment

      • The need to network “us time” (enlighten)
      • Identify the connectors
      • Identify and manage networking opportunities (online, phone, internet, blog, etc.)
      • Increasing Sr. Pastor engagement/creating opportunities
      • Need for more writing, interviews, broadcasting stories/testimonies/case studies
      • Denominational engagement - who are key gatekeepers (start regionally)
      • Explaining the benefits of Urbnet to Senior Pastors/Gatekeeper - what's the role / value add?
      Buffalo (Tommy)
      • Mentoring within their church (in the community) mentor for life (Boys to Men, Girls to Women)
      • 80% of the people are mentors
      • Schools, justice department, homeless youth

Role as Connector: as a coach to other youth workers

      Funding
      • need it
      • Stipends and Strategy needed
      • New funding paradigms for the urban context
      • Suburban ministries are having issues with their current funding strategy due to global tragedies
      Chicago (Brian)
        • Regional networks (N, S, W) – based on racial breakouts – 3 instead of 1
        • Southside – the “Fam” (family)
        • ID’d people doing it – other connectors
        • They do two major things – RELOAD and a hip-hop event
        • Looking for more neighborhood networking

Role as Connector – make sure connectors doing what they should do – empower original people

Possible model of Chris Brooks and DeVos and NNYM – NNYM pays Chris through his church with NNYM and DeVos funding, but Chris is neither a Devos nor NNYM employee. Serving common agenda with mutual benefit and empowering local ministry at same time
      Memphis (Cheryl) – UYI; Board
      • In networking for 13 years providing training, funding, pastoral care, resources
      • Networking as a core value – required for youth workers
      • Community clusters – regional/neighborhood for last 5 years
      • Started the youth leaders collaborator for youth
      • Faith Partners Network – to advocate for youth in city – social justice
      • Working with city council – jobs program
      • Citywide asset mapping
      • Created a “Youth Development Collaborative” faith and secular
      • 2010 initiative to work on high-risk and preventative services – church and community (“Operation Safe Communities)

Role as connector is: ED, co-creator, co-chair, major link for the faith community for youth ministers

      • Cooperation with other churches with initiatives dealing with youth
      • Congregational, individual, vocational compartmentalization
      NYC (Jeremy) The Coalition
      • Relationships key - living life together
      • Working through drama to reconciliation
      • Fed cap building grant – received by strengths of relationships
      • Reload Training - 400 participants
      • Other citywide and regional efforts, partnering with other ministries (Pastors Prayer Summit, Billy Graham Crusade, etc)
      Challenges of leadership transition
      Cleveland (Gail)
      • Changed the name to “United Networks of Youth Ministry”
      • Regional/neighborhood networks
      • Monthly meetings will be of regional leaders only to talk about regions
      • Trainings will remain together (fall – see you at the pole and winter – January to kick back in) True Love Waits will all be done together
