Obama versus Clinton: Is there any difference?

    By Jeremy | November 29, 2006

MSNBC profiles the early frontrunners for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton, and finds them remarkably similar:
“Obama and Clinton are very similar, not only in votes, but in their rhetorical approaches. Neither of them has shown a desire to spend their significant political capital taking risks to, for instance, confront entrenched power or highlight taboo issues like economic inequality.”

I don’t know… Obama seems to have a ‘JFK’ feel to him. He bristles with positive energy. The skeptical side of me says that the role of president in these days is more national cheerleader and fencerider than leader of the free world. Bush is an example of someone with convictions without appeal. I know many would disagree with me – but I can’t say Obama is a bad choice. Perhaps the country needs someone who will change our internal and external perceptions. JFK has a vibe – didn’t do much – but made the country feel it could be great – I think we need more of that.

John — I agree with you. There’s something to be said for charm and charisma and the ability to inspire the public. The article’s point is that once we get past personality, the substantive records of Obama and Clinton are extraordinarily similar.
