    Start Something

    By Jeremy | November 9, 2006

"There comes a moment when you’ve talked a matter through and it’s time to make a decision. Either you do it or you don’t. At the conclusion of our conversation, we determined we had everything in place to make a reasonable attempt. Only one thing eluded us: The guts to move forward." Article.
I first met Rudy Carrasco at the 2000 CCDA conference in New York City. A conference crasher with just a few hours on Friday morning to attend, I scouted out the schedule and saw a workshop title that resonated. My brother Jamie and I snuck into the building and found the room when someone announced there had been a room change. If we were looking for Workshop X (we were), we had to find the new location. Otherwise, if we were interested in the Internet, we could stay and hear Rudy instead. We stayed. I introduced myself after Rudy's presentation and we exchanged email addresses. Then a month later, we spent the better part of two days together at a ministry focus group. We nurtured a friendship online, primarily through IM and email, until his son was diagnosed with cancer in August 2004. My son began to pray for Samuel and our sons' dads' friendship grew closer. Now Rudy's using his influence as a featured columnist for Outreach magazine -- not to mention his growing stature as a board member to numerous ministries and sought after conference speaker -- to encourage others to perceive the new things God is doing and do something about them. The beauty is that even more than his accolades and writings, Rudy practices what he preaches in personal relationship with hundreds of people in his community and around the country. I for one am blessed to call him a friend, brother, mentor, and cheerleader. He's the person most singularly responsible for the writing I've done over the past four years, first insisting that I stop whining about not having enough time; then encouraging me to start with an article here and there; then nudging me for two years to finally start this blog; and most recently, giving me my first opportunity to contribute to a book. Thanks, Rudy, for modeling initiative and courage for the rest of us, and for starting something in me!
