Free WiFi, which reminds me ...
When people gripe about stuff -- failing education, no vacation money, digital divide issues, inaccessible internet access -- it would behoove them to visit the local public library. I haven't been to one since studying for the bar exam, and before that, uh, hardly ever since junior high. Yet public libraries bring the world home. Anyone, anywhere, can visit virtually any place in the known universe; explore virtually any profession; meet any hero; and imagine becoming whatever they want to be ... with or without a free library card! I'm reminded of Dr. Ben Carson, chief of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins University Hospital -- and failed elementary school student from Chicago's south side! -- whose life changed when his single mother began requiring him to do a book report for her at the neighborhood library each week. Only after he graduated medical school did she let him in on her little secret: she couldn't read any of his reports because she couldn't read! But her determination to change the pattern for her sons opened the door for him to become the first surgeon to ever seperate siamese twins conjoined at the head, and inspire greatness in young people around the world. It further empowered her to learn how to read for herself and ultimately graduate college. More on Ben Carson, in his own words:
