    4.2 miles

    By Jeremy | August 26, 2006

Judah hiked that distance to the summit of Hunter Mountain last Thursday. I’m still in awe. We had taken the “Skyride” chairlift 1600 ft. up the mountain, where I half-expected him to wander around for fifteen minutes before getting bored and taking the return trip down the mountain. When he stumbled within our first two minutes, scraping his knee, I suspected the adventure might end even sooner. Within ten minutes, he was wondering aloud why people like hiking. Then he heard voices approaching and discovered a family with seven kids between the ages of 6 and 10 (including a set of twins and quadruplets!) eager to reach the “Fire Tower.” Suddenly interested, he followed until a fork in the path. The dad asked to look at my map, but the trail to the fire tower was unmarked. Confident it was to the left, he invited us to join them – never mentioning that the walk, filled with steep embankments and unstable footing, was 2.1 miles each way. Judah was game, if a bit terrorized by the terrain on the way down, and the rest is history. Photo Set.
