On the Poor among U.S.
By Jeremy | October 22, 2008
“It is extraordinary to me that you can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire G8 can’t find $25 billion to save 25,000 children who die every day of preventable treatable disease and hunger. That’s mad, that is mad.” – Bono
+ Jordon Cooper reflects on the impact, or lack thereof, of the “Make Poverty History” campaign, especially in light of the response to America’s recent economic crisis.
+ Jose Zayas laments the West’s obsession with “Standard of Living” at the expense of actual living overseas.
+ Could it really be that a tithe of America’s $700B taxpayer-funded bank bailout package will be paid as compensation to the executives most responsible for the crisis in the first place?
Staff at six banks including Goldman Sachs and Citigroup are in line to pick up the payouts despite being the beneficiaries of a $700bn bail-out from the US government that has already prompted criticism. The government’s cash has been poured in on the condition that excessive executive pay would be curbed.
