Here’s to the Next 11 (and beyond!)
By Jeremy | June 22, 2008
Eleven years ago yesterday, we wed. She’s as beautiful as ever. According to Judah, the same can’t be said of me. Be that as it may, I’m glad she’s still mine.
Here’s the back story to our romance (as originally published in our wedding program, 06/21/97).
When people speak of love, they often include references to destiny. Courting couples wonder whether they are “meant to be,” and love-struck singles proclaim affections for “The One.” That thing called destiny sometimes proves very illusive, but when it works its charms for real, its effect is undeniable. Consider for example, Diana and Jeremy, on whom the divine match-maker schemed before they were born so that destiny would bring them together.
In the early 1970s, Simon Vikse, Jeremy’s grandfather, sponsored a weekly Christian television program. Around the same time, Jenny Vecchione, Diana’s grandmother, found herself in the midst of difficulties at home. One evening, Jenny stumbled upon Simon’s show and became a regular viewer. Several weeks later she responded to an invitation to receive Jesus Christ as her Savior and telephoned the counselors for prayer. Simon answered. That Sunday, Jenny and her daughters visited Simon’s church, the very building in which you now sit, and established an enduring friendship which will continue for generations. Simon faithfully gave of himself to disciple Jenny, her husband Richard, and their children, and Simon’s grandson now pledges a lifetime of devotion to Jenny’s granddaughter.
Jeremy met Diana at Christian High School, which one of Jenny’s daughters, Teresa, had founded. Instantly smitten, Jeremy nonetheless felt God telling him to be patient and not begin a relationship. Over the next two years, they met on about five more occasions, with the same emotions arising each time. Finally, in June 1994, Jeremy felt God release him to finally call her. He gladly obeyed and asked Diana to dinner on June 12, 1994. After several months together, they discovered that during the two years prior to their first date, the attraction between them was very mutual. God used their time apart to resolve personal issues first, so that they could build a relationship with Christ at its center.
Three years later, we gather to celebrate Jeremy and Diana’s wedding. The bride and groom thank God for meddling in the affairs of men, and thank you for sharing in their destiny.
“What God has drawn together, let no man put asunder.”
