    Random Thursday

    By Jeremy | October 26, 2006

+ This is why Cheney doesn't pass the smell test. (Cynic advisory alert!) He began his first term as vice president with a closed door "energy reform" effort spearheaded by disgraced white collar thief Ken Lay and other big oil execs. They witheld from the public any of their findings or reforms. Within a year or so, the US was embroiled in a controversial war in the oil rich Middle East. Crude oil and gas prices skyrocketed to record levels and, nearly five years later, continue to rise. Prices conveniently decline just before elections, only to reach new record highs shortly afterwards. And each quarter, big oil profits at new record levels. Exxon Mobile's earnings rose to $10.49 billion in the third quarter 2006, the second most profitable quarter ever for a publicly traded company. The most profitable quarter? Exxon Mobile's $10.7 billion fourth quarter 2005. + Evangelicals for Darfur. Sign the statement. + Entrepreneurship from below - "Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said. "Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights." HT: Rudy + Powerful flick: Flags of our Fathers + "Culture of deceit is no excuse for Rogers' antics" - On Kenny Roger's suspected World Series' cheating and MLB's blind eye towards it. + Peter Ong on the generational conflicts among Asian American Christians. I suspect similar tensions challenge other immigrant communities as well. + Jose and Mayra are planting a church!
